Caring for Your Chimney & Stove

Effective Flues & Chimneys

Re-lining and Repairs

From the hearth up to the crown of the chimney there are many things that can go wrong and impact on the quality of the fire in your stove, the amount of fuel you use, and most importantly your safety. Did you know there are around 7,000 chimney fires each year in England alone?

Most of the hazards associated with chimneys and flues can be resolved by regular chimney sweeping to prevent blockages, but when you have a woodburning stove it is wise to have a periodic inspection of your chimney by experts like us at Clearways.

We’ll take care of things like ensuring the flashing around the chimney is watertight, repointing the chimney and making structural repairs if necessary. We’ll check that the chimney liner is sound and not deteriorating or cracked.

If necessary we can re-line the chimney with a flexible stainless steel tube to prevent fumes and smoke from leaking into the house, improve the updraught, and prevent tar from seeping through to stain walls.

Servicing Your Stove

Essential Stove Maintenance

All manufacturers of wood or multi-fuel stoves recommend that they be serviced by a HETAS approved engineer, like us at Clearways, at least once a year to keep running safely and efficiently.

A service will uncover whether any essential parts of the stove have become seized, rusty or corroded, allowing smoke and fumes to escape into the room.

During a stove service we will inspect things like the door rope seals, glass and glass seals, air intakes, fire bricks and baffle plates, and all the connections and fire cement seals. We’ll also check that your carbon monoxide alarm is in place and operational.

Essential maintenance for a stove, whatever fuel it runs off of, is to have an annual thorough clean of the chimney or flue by our qualified, professional chimney sweep.

If we come across any faults or defects during a regular stove service we will draw these to your attention and can often rectify or repair straight away or arrange to come back and do.

Fuel For Your Stove

Keep Your Stove Healthy

Using the correct fuel for your stove is crucial for its well-being. Consult the manufacturer’s instructions and make sure you follow them if you want long, reliable and safe performance from your stove and flue.
